THE DR BAKILI MULUZI INSTITUTE (BMI) OFFICIAL LAUNCH

The Bakili Muluzi Institute was officially launched on Monday, 10th February, 2003 in a colorful ceremony held at Sanjika Palace, Blantyre.  His Excellency, Dr. Bakili Muluzi, President of the Republic of Malawi officiated the ceremony as Founder and Chairman of the BMI.

The ceremony was well attended by 300 dignitaries from all segments of the Malawian society including cabinet ministers, principal secretaries, chief executives of parastatal and private companies, leaders of academic institutions, and the business community. 

The program began with a speech by the Executive Director, Dr. Margaret Asalele Mbilizi who gave an overview of the aims and objectives of the BMI.  The full text of her speech is found here and her pictures taken while delivering the speech can be can be viewed by clicking here.  The launch included a presentation of certificates of achievement to 13 chief executives and senior managers who attend BMI’s Inaugural Leadership Development Workshop held at KuChawe Inn, Zomba from 2nd – 7th February, 2003 in collaboration with the Global Leadership Development Foundation.  A photo album of the workshop participants and presentation of certificates can be found here.

The keynote speaker at the official launch of BMI was Professor Dustan Wai who is the World Bank Country Manager and Resident Representative.  He spoke on “Capacity Building As Key to Development in Africa”.  The full text of his speech can be found here and pictures taken while delivering the speech can be viewed by clicking here.

The Chairman of the Bakili Muluzi Institute’s Advisory Committee, Professor Donton Mkandawire, introduced Trustees of the BMI and Members of the Advisory Committee before requesting the President to speak.  Professor Mkandawire’s picture taken while delivering the speech can be seen by clicking here.

His Excellency, Dr. Bakili Muluzi’s speech was on “The Role of Leaders in Social and Economic Transformation”.  The State President emphasized the need for committed leaders who are focused on making significant contributions to Malawi’s development.  Dr. Bakili Muluzi’s speech is found here and pictures taken while delivering the speech can be viewed by clicking here.

The BMI Secretariat Opens

His Excellency Dr. Bakili Muluzi on 7th November 2002 visited the BMI Secretariat situated on the 2nd Floor of Unit House in Blantyre. The President was welcomed by a cheerful crowd outside the building that chanted and sung throughout his visit.

President of Global Leadership Development Foundation (GLDF) visits BMI

The President of the Global Leadership Development Foundation, Dr Theodore Ferguson, visited the BMI from 12 - 16th November 2002. Accompanied by the Vice-President Dr Edward Clarke, the two visitors held discussions with the Executive Director and Trustees of the BMI on possible collaboration between the two institutions. Dr Theodore Ferguson, author of the Leadership Development program known as Leading from Above the Line, met in audience with His Excellency Dr Bakili Muluzi at the State Lodge in Lilongwe on 14th November 2002. Dr Bakili Muluzi Launches New Book
